The New Jersey Department of Transportation operates over 30 RWIS (Roadside Weather Information System) stations. The majority of these stations were manufactured by SSI (Surface Systems, Inc.), while a handful of older stations were built by Vaisala.

The Office of the New Jersey State Climatologist (ONJSC) has has been contracted by the NJDOT to analyze their RWIS network for the purpose of forming an expert recommendation concerning the optimum placement needed to obtain the greatest monitoring efficiency possible from the existing stations.

The ONJSC analysis consists of obtaining RWIS data and analyzing it from both meteorological and climatological perspectives. As part of this analysis, the ONJSC plans to visit all RWIS sites, document them, and investigate the surrounding area in order to obtain a geographical and climatological "feel" for the environment. Our office will also enter the RWIS data into both SQL and GIS databases for investigative research and display purposes.

The purpose of this web site it to provide the NJDOT and others with the ability to monitor our progress as we work to develop and analyze the RWIS network through 2001. With further funding, the ONJSC would be able to provide real-time, public access to data from the RWIS and other networks. Many other states already employ data from their RWIS network for transporation, industrial, business, recreational, agricultural, energy monitoring, public-safety, and educational purposes. New Jersey deserves to be next.
